What is Baptism?

Baptism marks the start of a journey of faith which involves turning away from all that is evil, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family.

Baptism at the Benefice

Our view is that everyone has the right to ask for Baptism, also known as Christening when for a baby or child.

During a Baptism service parents and Godparents make declarations on behalf of the baby. A little water is poured on the head and the sign of the cross made on the forehead. This is a symbol of new life as a Christian.

Thanksgiving for a New Baby

This can be done at a service called an Act of Thanksgiving after the birth or adoption of a child. If you are not sure whether Baptism or an Act of Thanksgiving would be more appropriate for you and your child please talk to Rev’d Stephen who will be able to advise.

Adult Baptism

If you are an adult and wish to be Baptised, you will be asked to meet with the Rector three times, the first time to sort out times and other details, and then twice more to reflect on the faith journey you wish to begin. You are never too old to take this step. Whenever it happens Baptism is at the heart of an amazing journey of faith as a follower of Jesus Christ.
